New Plymouth District population

There were 1,725 newcomers (migrants and refugees who arrived in New Zealand up to three years previously) in New Plymouth District on the day of the 2006 Population Census. These newcomers make up 3 percent of the District population of 68,901. The majority of the District dwellers are New Zealand-born (83 percent) and 10 percent are longer term migrants who have been living in New Zealand for three years or longer.

Birthplace of Newcomers

The newcomers to New Plymouth District are born in more than 150 different countries. The largest proportions of newcomers to the District are born in England (31 percent) and Australia (11 percent).  These newcomers join the two largest longer term migrant communities of people also born in these countries.
Another 6 percent of newcomers are born in South Africa, 6 percent in China and another 6 percent in India.
