Introduction

Settlement Support New Plymouth is a clear point of contact for newcomers and their families who come to live in New Zealand and make New Plymouth their home.

"Are you new,or returning to New Zealand "? Our aim is to help you settle well in your new community. Settlement Support will assist you to overcome the challenges of settling in Taranaki. Contact us at Level 1, King's Building, 36 Devon Street West, New Plymouth or phone 06 7591088.

We provide friendly information, support, referral, coordination, orientation for you and your families.

 

How we can help you? The services we offer are:

  •     Face to face visits to provide you with information and advice that will support you to settle well.
  •     Individual referral on complex settlement related matters.
  •     Information about housing, tenancy, drivers license, property, taxation, family issues, consumer rights
        and other general matters.
  •     Workshops on aspects of New Zealand that may be different to your home country such as Relating well
        in New Zealand, NZ education system, employment, legal system etc.- see bottom of this page to
        download the information package.
  •     Referral to employment and job search advice.
  •     Referral to community groups and other organisations for additional settlement support.
  •     Advice about the best English language course to meet your resettlement and employment needs.
  •     Access to Multilingual Language Line to non-English speaking clients.
  •     Referral to Taranaki Multi-Ethnic Council to link with the ethnic support network.

 

Aim of Settlement Support, New Plymouth (Goal 3 of the New Zealand Settlement Strategy)

  •     Clear point of contact for newcomers to New Zealand and their families where they are able to access information.
  •     Strengthen settlement outcomes for newcomers to settle in New Plymouth.
  •     Sustain an effective settlement support network.
  •     Easy and improved access to settlement advice information.
  •     More responsive mainstream services for newcomers at the local level.
  •     Reflect local needs in the local settlement planning.
  •     Identify the gaps or eliminate duplication of services that support settlement.
  •     Incorporate local settlement needs and issues into the National Planning network for further development
        of the NZ Settlement Strategy.

 

New Zealand Settlement Strategy - Our Future together

The New Zealand Settlement Strategy plays an important role in helping newcomers settle better in New Zealand.
Its aim is to ensure that New Zealand is a welcoming destination for newcomers.
The New Zealand Settlement Strategy took a collaborative approach across various government agencies integrating the resources to deliver the best outcomes for newcomers to New Zealand.

Newcomers to New Zealand can:

  •     Feel welcomed, accepted and respected
  •     Obtain employment appropriate to their skills
  •     Be supported to confidently communicate in English
  •     Access information and responsive services
  •     Maintain their cultural identities
  •     Feel safe
  •     Accept, respect, and contribute to the New Zealand way of life.
